GORDON Connelly has this morning been announced as the new manager of Forres Mechanics.

The 54-year-old, who managed the Cans for a spell two decades ago, will be joined at Mosset Park by two assistant managers in Steven MacDonald and Brian Macleod.

The appointment comes after the departure of Charlie Rowley, who took change of his last match in Saturday's 2-1 Highland League Cup success against Turriff United.

Assistant manager and former club captain Nathan Sharp has also left the club.

Gordon Connelly's last job in the Highland League was at Rothes, where he was Steven MacDonald's assistant. Those roles will reverse at Mechanics.

A Forres Mechanics statement said: “Forres Mechanics are delighted to announce the appointment of Gordon Connelly as our new first team manager.

"Gordon was previously a player-manager at the club and also had a spell as manager of Wick Academy.

"He will be joined by his assistants in ex-Rothes manager Steven MacDonald and ex-Clach manager Brian Macleod."

Connelly was the man who brought departing manager Charlie Rowley to Forres Mechanics at the start of the century.

More recently, he managed Wick Academy between 2014 and 2017, before taking over as assistant manager at Rothes – a role which he left in 2019.

While Steven MacDonald has experience as Rothes manager, Brian Macleod was Clachnacuddin manager until late 2019 and was in temporary charge of Nairn County at the start of this campaign.

The first match in charge for the new management team is against Rothes at Mosset Park in the Highland League on Wednesday night.

At the weekend, Mechanics host league leaders Fraserburgh.
