FORRES Gymnastics Club brought home silverware from a recent friendly competition in Blackburn, near Inverurie.

The club took part in the competition with Inverurie and Balmoor gymnastics clubs on June 11.

A number of gold, silver and bronze medals – as well as two championship trophies – were won by a group of girls of varying ages.

Club head coach Patsy Fraser-Mackenzie said: "It was a great day. It was good to see the girls present their best gymnastics, enjoy the competition and meet girls from other clubs after all the trials of Covid.

"Our gymnasts don't get as many training hours as most clubs, so it's heartening to see that they can still achieve success.

"The coaches and gymnasts at the club work very hard so it's lovely to see the girls thrive in a competitive environment.

"All competitions will help them gain experience – but we try to focus on the performance rather than the result, it's all about hoping you get a good score because you're never in control of other people's results."

The club finished training at the end of June, before a selected group of girls joined former national coach Sandy Richardson for a day of tumble training at Fyrish Gymnastics Club in Alness on July 21.

Sandy formerly trained Commonwealth Games athletes and has great experience in the sport.

Club training sessions, which take place at Forres Academy on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and occasionally Sundays, resumed on July 20.

The club is set to hold trials for girls aged five towards the end of August, as they bid to increase numbers.

"We lost some gymnasts over Covid so we are trying to build back up again," Patsy added. "We are trying to attract fresh blood as the club is a bit smaller than I would like it to be.

"There are about 30 girls at the moment, who come from from and wide, but we are trying to attract new members."

Anyone who would like their child to be considered for a place in the club should contact the secretary at forresgymnastics@hotmail.co.uk.
