A FORRES cadet has been crowned UK cross country champion at the Army Cadet Force national championships.

Cadet Galesha Paterson (14) and Cadet Lance Corporal Giacomo Innes (14) from 1st Battalion The Highlanders' Forres travelled to Altcar training camp near Liverpool to compete.

As well as winning a team medal as part of the junior girls side, Paterson also received a first place medal for finishing first in her action race earning herself ACF champion colours, the battalion's first UK champion in 10 years.

She said: "A lot of the other cadets from the UK are professional runners, running for school teams and clubs, so the standard of competition was very good.

"I didn't think that I was even in first as there were one or two runners in front of me.

"It turned out afterwards that they were runners from the intermediate and senior girls races being run at the same time."

Both runners qualified for the championships after placing in the Scottish championship in October last year.

Innes, who was part of the junior boys team, said: "It was an amazing experience and a huge honour to represent Scotland."
