Forres athletes in the running for sportMoray awards





FORRES sports enthusiasts will be well represented at the annual

sportMoray’s Recognition Awards next week.

Ten individuals and four teams from the area have been nominated for titles that recognise people who have contributed or achieved a great deal in their chosen sport at recreational, regional, national or international level.

"Yet again there is an abundance of shortlisted candidates from the Forres area represented," said Moray Council sports development officer, Kim Patterson

"We have witnessed some amazingly talented athletes and dedicated club members over the years putting Moray well and truly on the map. Since 1999, the awards night has grown in stature and size which easily proves the enthusiasm of the Moray community in the world of sport."

Six of the ten categories at the awards feature entries familiar to Forres for their outstanding sporting achievements.

They are: the SALSC Local Service to Sport Award (Alan Thomson, Forres, Swimming; Dr Douglas Murray, Forres, Orienteering); the Junior Sportsman Award (Robert Fraser, Dunphail, Tetrathlon; Andrew Barr, Dyke, Orienteering; Callum McBeath, Forres, Swimming); the Junior Team Award (Applegrove Primary Cricket Team; Gillies Munro/Daniel Harris, Sailing

Senior Team Award: Forres Harriers, Forres Bluefins); the School Sport Volunteer Award (Naomi Millburn, Forres, Cheerleading; Iain McDonald, Forres, Kayaking; Ashleigh Dean, Forres, Trampoling); and the Sports Person of the Year Award (Peter Robertson, Forres, Cycling; Anne Docherty, Forres, Running/Triathlon).

"The awards is a good event is because it recognises people who have done a huge amount of work in the local community in sport that should be commended," said Kim Patterson. "Its also great to see how in such a small place like Moray we can generate athletes competing at the world stage."

Proceeds from a raffle at the sportMoray Recognition Awards will be used for the development of projects such as the 2014 Recognition Awards, future club network evenings, local school aged sports events/festivals, the Pinto Tribute Fund and grant aid to local affiliated sports clubs and individuals.
