Graeme Reid (42), who lives in Aberlour, will fly out to Almaty in Kazakhstan in May to compete against some of the world's best powerlifters in the equipped category of the event.

It will be the Moray strong man's second time representing Great Britain at an international competition after he placed sixth in last year's championships in Lithuania.

The former Forres Academy teacher was selected after he secured a second place podium finish at the British championships in February.

There, he equalled his own personal best lift of 200kg, a Scottish record, before having his finish upgraded to first after the lifter who had initially won was disqualified.

Reid has thanked his pupils and colleagues for their support as he gears up for a busy year of events.

He said: "Moray council's SEBN team have been really supportive as have the young people that I work with.

"The pupils have said I need to do better than last year's sixth place finish at the world championships in Lithuania so I’ll give it my best shot.

"There is also a strong possibility that I may be in contention for a trip to Budapest in August to lift in the European championships.

"Before this I've got the Scottish Masters championships in June. Hopefully I'll do well in all of those and set a few new personal bests."
