NEW Forres Thistle manager Ian Campbell admits it is going to be a hard task to top last season.

Forres Thistle's new manager Ian Campbell is ready for the new season ahead.

But he is up for the challenge after taking charge at Logie Park.

Under the guidance of previous boss Scott Roy, the Jags won the Elginshire Cup and the Archibald Cup.

Forres also enjoyed a good season in the First Division West, where they finished second, behind champions Buckie Rovers.

Roy stepped down at the end of last term and Campbell agreed to take over the position of manager.

The new boss believes he is inheriting a strong squad and can’t wait to get started.

He said: “The set-up at the club is very good and there is a decent group of players there.

“So far as I know, most of the squad from last season has agreed to stay.

“If I take in anyone else then I am going to try to make sure they are based locally.

“The team won two cups and just missed out on promotion by finishing second in the league.

“It will be difficult to top what the club achieved last season, but I hope we can keep up the high standards that were set.”

Campbell has coaching experience working with youth teams at Elgin City.

He also helps to run the Lossiemouth Under-20s side – a role that he will continue next season as their matches take place on a Monday, a night when there is no junior football.

Campbell previously enjoyed a season playing for the Jags and is looking forward to action getting underway next month.

Thistle’s first competitive match is on Tuesday, 2nd August, at home to Fochabers in the Grill League Cup.

The Jags have been drawn in Group 3 of the competition, a section which also features Colony Park, Dyce and Burghead.

Forres’ first league game in the First Division West comes on Saturday, 20th August, at home to Spey Valley United.

The Cromdale-based club has been formed following the merger of Grantown and Spey Valley.

Other new sides in the First Division West next season are Whitehills, who have come out of abeyance and Montrose Roselea.

Forres also know their opponents in two other cup competitions that get underway early in the new season.

On Saturday, 27th August, Thistle travel to play Banks o’ Dee in the first round of the North Regional Cup.

The following weekend, Forres are away to Buchanhaven Hearts in the first round of the GA Engineering Cup.
