Elgin Cycling Club chair Lorna Breetzke lands Scottish award for voluntary work in championing her sport
Moray’s passionate champion of the sport of cycling has been recognised with a national award.
Elgin Cycling Club chair Lorna Breetzke picked up the volunteer of the year prize at Scottish Cycling’s annual awards in Grangemouth.
Lorna has been at the forefront of promoting her sport not just in Moray but across the north as part of a series of initiatives.
Not only is she an office bearer at her Elgin club, but Lorna is chair of the Scottish governing body’s north regional development group.
In addition, she is a committee member of the Scottish Cycling Sports Commission, and a trustee of a new cycling-for-health charity encouraging people to lead a more active lifestyle through the sport.
What’s more, Lorna is promising even more cycling initiatives in this area in the future, and says the sport provides so many health and wellbeing benefits.
“This is awesome,” she said. “I don’t know why I do so much volunteering for cycling. I just love the sport, and I want more people to find out how good it is for health, mental health, general recreation and competition.”
“Watch this space. We have plans for more innovations and events. We’ll be back next year.”
Last year, Lorna was part of a 23-strong Elgin CC contingent picking up the club of the year trophy at the Scottish awards. This time round she was receiving an individual accolade.
A spokesperson for her club said: “Lorna was a driving force behind the club’s recent development into one of the largest and most inclusive cycling clubs in Scotland, and is justifiably proud of Elgin’s equal gender balance, and the efforts it puts into welcoming new cyclists and members to its events.
“She has also been a driving force behind the resurgence of the regional road and time trial racing scene and she chairs a committee responsible for the development of the region including the organising of races from Elgin to Invergordon.”
Lorna is at the forefront of the new Get On A Bike charity, which has been established to provide bikes and equipment to adults in Moray, in an effort to improve health, both physically and mentally, through outdoor exercise and social interaction.
