Elgin Judo Club hosts masterclass from martial arts star Gary Edwards in support of young members with additional needs

A masterclass from a sporting great helped Elgin Judo Club raise cash for a cause close to their hearts.

The club recruited Scottish judo’s head talent development coach Gary Edwards, a multiple past champion in the sport, to hold a masterclass at Moray Sports Centre in an effort to inspire its members.

Some of the Elgin outfit’s martial arts youngsters have additional needs, and the event acted as a fundraiser in support of local charities.

More than £500 was raised for Adaptive Judo within Scotland, a charity helping people with additional needs, and MFR Cash for Kids.

Club coach Keith Flynn explained: “We have a number of kids at the club with various additional needs.

“So it was one that was close to our hearts.

“We try to be as inclusive as possible as a club and felt this was worthwhile to help anyone who would like to try judo but maybe doesn't have the confidence to.”

Edwards addressed around 50 club members aged between six and over 50.

The coach has reached the status of 7th Dan in his sport (10 is the maximum) and is a multiple Scottish champion who has regularly appeared on top international podiums.

“It was an absolute brilliant experience for everyone involved, being on the mat with him and being coached.

“With a little luck this has maybe inspired our next future Olympian.”
