Kinloss motorist caught twice in Moray driving on cocaine

A woman caught twice at the wheel while under the influence of cocaine has received a lengthy motoring ban.

Elgin Sheriff Court heard that Emily Cameron has given up driving after she was stopped for a second time in less than three months.

The 28-year-old first came to the attention of the police on October 23 last year as they were conducting speed checks on vehicles travelling through Roseisle.

Procurator Fiscal Victoria Silver said: “It was noticed by officers that there was a strong smell of cannabis coming from her vehicle.”

When questioned, Cameron responded that someone else has been smoking the drug in the car.

The officers then carried out a roadside test which provided a positive reading for cocaine – a finding that was subsequently confirmed by an official test conducted at a police station.

The second offence occurred on January 13 upon the B9011 road between Kinloss and Forres.

Recognising Cameron, the same officers pulled over her car.

On this occasion she was found to be nearly three times the limit at which the law states cocaine hampers a person’s ability to drive safely.

In addition, a search of her car also revealed a small amount of cannabis, worth about £10.

Defence solicitor Megan Lee said: “She has stopped driving since the second incident and now no longer owns a car.

“She relies instead on public transport and friends and family.

“She appreciates that she faces a long ban. She’s also been very candid about her problems with addiction and would appreciate some assistance from the courts.”

Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood placed Cameron, who lives at Grange Road, Kinloss, under the court’s supervision for the next 12 months.

In addition to a three-year driving ban, the sheriff also ordered her to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work for the community.
