Moray and Inverness chamber of commerce groups join forces to send A96 appeal to Scottish Government

A pair of north business groups have joined forces to press the Scottish Government over the dualling of the A96.

Moray Chamber of Commerce and Inverness Chamber of Commerce have jointly written to SNP Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop calling for her to release a definitive timetable for the road’s dualling.

The letter, sent on behalf of businesses across the A96 corridor, highlights “increasing frustration” over the lack of progress on dualling the road between Aberdeen and Inverness.

The Chambers argue that continued delays are causing “economic constraint”, increasing congestion, and jeopardising safety.

The letters calls for three things - a definitive timetable for dualling, including bypasses for Elgin and Keith; dual carriageway bypasses for Nairn, Elgin and Keith; and delivery of rail service improvements on Aberdeen-Inverness line by 2030.

Sarah Medcraf, Chief Executive of Moray Chamber of Commerce, said: “Businesses rely on the A96 for trade, connectivity, and growth.

“We have already lost a decade due to inactivity which has stifled the potential for economic growth. So now, we need action - not more delays.

“The full dualling of this route is essential for safety, economic development, and Scotland’s transition to renewable energy.

“We stand ready to engage with the Transport Secretary and her teams to ensure that this critical infrastructure delivers maximum benefits to our businesses and communities.”

Colin Marr, Chief Executive of Inverness Chamber of Commerce, added: “The A96 is a critical link for businesses and communities in the north of Scotland.

“We welcome the inclusion of the Inverness to Nairn dualling in the National Transport Strategy Delivery Plan.

“However, we need a firm commitment from the Scottish Government to deliver on its promises for full dualling of the A96 to ensure this region has the infrastructure it needs to thrive.

“We need quick and firm action now so this route is fit for purpose, helping the Highlands and Moray achieve its potential.”

The Chambers are urging businesses and individuals to take part in the A96 Corridor Review Consultation to ensure their voices are heard. Feedback can be submitted via the online survey here.
