A LOCAL charity shop is calling for people to improve their health and wellbeing by volunteering in 2020.

Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland, based at 77 High Street and raising money to help people affected by debilitating conditions, is run by a team of volunteers who enjoy a sense of purpose and achievement while developing new skills and experience.

Eileen Nicoll has been working at the shop at least four-days-a-week from 10am-5pm for the last six years.

She said: "I do a bit of everything really but a lot of administration work. Volunteers here can choose what they want to do, be it assisting on the shop floor, sorting donations or cleaning for example. I love meeting people and doing something for charity."

Head of volunteering at Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland Paul Okroj believes volunteers are vital in helping support people across Scotland.

He said: "They help to provide our services, help run our many shops and assist us in creating exciting fundraising events. Without them we simply couldn’t reach and help as many people as we do."

He added: "Volunteer with us and not only will you change people’s lives but you’ll be making a huge difference to your own health and wellbeing, it’s a ‘win-win’ for everyone. Make 2020 your year to make a fresh start and help us to ensure there is no life half lived in Scotland."

Volunteering is proven to positively impact physical and mental health by increasing activity levels, reducing anxiety and stress, and connecting with others.

The charity which helps people living with chest, heart and stroke conditions to live their lives to the full, relies heavily on the support of its volunteers. In order to meet the needs of the one in five people in Scotland affected by these long-term conditions, Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland is calling on people to take up various roles which span across their rehabilitation services, community support groups, shops, and fundraising events and in their offices across Scotland.
