Orbex support for Moray Inshore Rescue Organisation is ‘very welcome’

An aerospace company is sponsoring a group of lifesavers based five miles away from its headquarters.

Forres Enterprise Park-based orbital launch services company, Orbex, is providing Findhorn’s Moray Inshore Rescue Organisation (MIRO) with the much welcome funding boost.

Orbex CEO, Phil Chambers, confirmed the money will support costs associated with mooring MIRO’s boats as part of the company’s commitment to supporting the local community.

He said: “MIRO plays such a vital role in keeping the community safe and we are very happy to play our part in supporting the charity in its work.

“We’re also looking forward to collaborating with the charity to deliver a water safety event as part of our commitment to ensure that our team take learnings from the experts and are well equipped with the skills they need when living and working on the beautiful Moray coast.”

MIRO covers Findhorn bay and the inshore waters of the Moray Firth between Burghead and Nairn., operating with volunteers on call 24/7. They responded to 14 emergency callouts in 2024 and six more in the first three months of 2025.

The donation from Orbex will cover the cost for one year of berthing MIRO rescue, the Glyn Whitehead III, on the pontoon at Findhorn marina in the summer and in the boatyard in the winter. This includes year-round storage in the boatyard of the second MIRO inland boat.

The water safety information session will be on July 25. It will include information about MIRO, general water safety advice and specific advice for people using Findhorn bay including paddle boarders, kite surfers, swimmers and sailors.

MIRO chairman, John Low, is grateful to Orbex for the support.

He said: “We are totally reliant on donations to enable us to provide our life saving service so this support is very welcome.”
