MORAY Council is spending a quarter-of-a-million pounds on an important local building.

Forres House Community Centre games hall was closed for three weeks while repairs to the roof were undertaken – ongoing work is expected to be completed by March at the latest, at a total cost of £250,000.

A local authority spokeswoman confirmed the existing roof covering was life expired.

She said: “The work is progressing well, and is on track for completion in the new year. The centre has not had to close, and we’ve relocated user groups to alternative areas of the building whenever possible, rather than stop sessions.”

Forres House leaked in a number of rooms whenever there was hard rain. The building was constructed in the 1970s, and its two halls offer space for a range of sports and leisure user groups. It also houses Forres Library, Ray’s Community Café and a Scottish Football Association regional officer.

Council staff including the social work team were relocated to the centre when its local access point moved from Auchernack House during budget cuts.

Councillor Lorna Creswell (Forres, Independent) lives next door.

She said: “The roof replacement is well in hand, with mild weather helping the work progress quickly.

“The centre was much missed by groups who could not meet there during lockdown. They are looking forward to the reopening when the restrictions are eased next year.

“We need to be using our facilities to their maximum and promote the opportunities to our fellow residents. The investment in the roof is in readiness for next year’s activities when we are back on track.”
