A man has been arrested and charged following a car crash on the A96 that left both him and a female passenger in hospital.

The A96 was closed for several hours west of Nairn following the crash, which occurred at the B9092 Hilton of Delnies junction shortly after 2.20am on Friday.

Emergency services attended the scene and the A96 was closed to traffic between Hilton of Delnies and the Inverness Airport turn-off. The road reopened just before 7am.

A police spokesperson said: “Around 2.20am on Friday, a car failed to stop for officers on the A96.

“A short time later it was traced, having crashed, on the A96 at the junction with the B9092.

“The male driver and female passenger were taken to hospital for treatment.

“The 32-year-old male driver was arrested and charged in connection and has been released on an undertaking to appear at Inverness Sheriff Court at a later date.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “We were contacted at 2.26 am and sent two appliances from Nairn to the scene of what I understand was a one-vehicle accident just outside Nairn on the road to Inverness.

“We received the stop message from the crews at 2.46am.”
