Ukrainian refugee is a buttery champ
A Ukrainian refugee has come second in the World Buttery Championships after learning the skill in Forres.
Iryna Porfilova came to Scotland two years ago after fleeing the war in her homeland. Residing with her sponsors in the Dyke area, she originally spoke little English. However she took up employment with Chris Gair at ‘Bakes You Knead’ located at the Forres Enterprise Park.
Chris taught Iryna how to make butteries by hand, which are then sold locally and all over the UK. At the same time he has also helped her get to grips with the language.
Iryna’s success at the championships in Aberdeen prompted Douglas Ross to lodge a motion in the Scottish Parliament congratulating her on her efforts.
The Highlands and Islands MSP said: “Iryna has really made her mark locally and is a true inspiration.
“When I presented her with a framed copy of the parliamentary motion I was also able to buy some of her award-winning butteries which certainly went down well in our house.”
Iryna said “I am delighted to win this award, which was made possible by Chris teaching me how to make the best butteries.”
