Tesco Buckie doughnut stacking world record bid in Moray

No records may have tumbled but plenty of fun was had during an attempt to claim the world doughnut stacking crown.

Buckie Tesco was the place to be on Thursday, August 1 for shoppers who fancied their chances of seeing their names in the Guinness Book of Record.

The task - which was not as simple as it seemed at first - was to beat the world record by stacking 10 or more doughnuts in 30 seconds. The stack had to remain standing for a minimum of five seconds to be in with a shout of world record fame.

A steady stream of customers of all ages came over to the stall set up at the front of the store to have a tilt at the title. Coming closest to glory was Buckie Tesco staff member Sammy Atkinson with a grand total of seven.

She said: “I didn’t know what to expect when I tried it, to be honest.

“It was really good fun!”

Regardless of how well - or badly - each shopper did, there was the chance to take away a fresh doughnut baked in-store after completing the challenge.

Fittingly, one of those having a go was Emma Pirie, who works in the bakery section and had baked the doughnuts for the challenge in the morning.

She commented: “I thought it was going to be easier than this but it was good fun to try it.”

A mission to buy some DIY equipment saw Aleta Salter get to grips with some doughnuts.

She said: “I was actually just in to get a paint brush and I walked by the stall and thought I’d have a go.

Nicola Leal has a go at stacking some doughnuts:

“It’s a great thing to do, especially with the kids on holiday as you can get them involved.”

Also trying her hand was Lyndsay Taylor.

“I like a doughnut so I just had to do it!” she joked.

“I really enjoyed doing it and it was something different.”

Swapping stethoscope for stacking doughnuts was retired Buckie GP Dr Jim Tuckerman.

He said: “It was excellent fun and something you don’t see every day.”

Having a bash at the title while doing her weekly shop was Lorraine Boa, who owns the Victoria Hotel in Portknockie.

She said: “It was lovely, good fun for an afternoon.”

Showing particular determination to have a crack at the record was Buckie Tesco customer assistant Kate Forbes-Marshall.

“I’m extremely competitive, but it was good fun,” she confessed.

HNM reporter Alan Beresford has a bash at the challenge:

Behind the event was Dave Medina, community and wellbeing champion at Buckie Tesco.

He said: “I think it’s gone really well.

“Everyone had fun and we gave away lots of doughnuts, which was the whole point of the event.

“There was a steady stream of people comign by to have a go with a good range of ranges, too.

Making his record bid is HNM photographer Daniel Forsyth:

“It’s the first time I’ve done something like this and I reckon I’ll definitely try something else in the future.”

Finding fun activities for kids during the school holidays was the main inspiration behind the doughnut stacking challenge.

Dave continued: “I’ve got a son and it occurred to me that if you want to do something you have to go to Elgin or Inverness.

“I wanted to do something that would be local, free and fun.

“One day I had half an hour left before the end of my shift and I decided to do some research into what I could do and I hit on the doughnut stacking. I got in touch with the Guinness Book of Record and they sent lots of rules for the challenge and what to do if anyone stacked 10 or more doughnuts”
