Inverness Sheriff Court was told that the victim managed to seek safety in the store which was on the verge of closing at midnight.

The police were called and officers traced and arrested Cameron Hay at the post office nearby.

Hay was remanded in custody after appearing today by video link and pleading guilty to a charge of assault to severe injury.

Fiscal depute Susan Love stated that the 24-year-old’s victim had required surgery for the injury they’d sustained.

Hay, whose address was given in court papers as Inverness Prison, was already on a community payback order at the time of the offence.

Defence solicitor Grant Daglish made no application for bail.

Sheriff Iain Cruickshank deferred sentence until October 8 for a background report to be prepared on Hay.
