A LOCAL teenager is set to play a key role in developing cycling in Scotland.

Over the next two years, as part of the Scottish Cycling Young People’s Panel (SCYPP), Erin Wood has been named as one of the first ever nine-person Scottish Cycling Young People’s Panel.

She said: "I am absolutely over the moon! I look forward to being a voice for cycling in the North of Scotland ... let's do this!"

Led by national governing body Scottish Cycling, the panel provides a platform to represent a voice for young people to influence and shape the future of the sport.

Over the next two years, the panel will have their views heard and valued, as well as the chance to influence decision making and drive change.

The recruitment process started in March when applications were submitted by people aged 14 to 23-years-old from every region.

The new project for Scottish Cycling sits at the heart of its strategy. CEO, Craig Burn, is excited about the impact that the panel has the potential to make on the sport across the country.

He said: "I look forward to seeing the positive impact their dedication and passion for cycling in Scotland has and encourage them to take full advantage of this experience."

The panel will be engaged in projects from regional development to events, coaching and education.

Erin, who is the most northerly panel member, is an avid mountain biker and competes across a range of disciplines. Most recently, she was 4th overall Female at '10 Under the Ben' in Fort William.

She said: "I am passionate about seeing more girls getting involved in the sport, and recognise the benefits that engaging in physical activity can have."

Outside cycling, Erin is involved with her local Scouts Explorers group, and has been instrumental in creating a new programme of activities for it, including planning a cycling camp this summer.

On being selected as a member of the first ever Scottish Cycling Young People’s Panel, she said: “I am absolutely over the moon! I look forward to being a voice for cycling in the North of Scotland, let's do this!"
