Scone makers are being urged to register for what is believed to be Scotland’s only and possibly the world’s only Tattie Scone competition which will run alongside the event taking place in Grant Park on June 29.

The aim is to make a tattie scone using a set recipe and set ingredients plus your own ‘magic’ ingredient with the tastiest and most imaginative scone winning a trophy donated by the host, the Oakwood Cookery School, Elgin and the accolade of Scotland’s Tastiest Tattie Scone Maker 2013.

Entrants must be over 16 and as there is a limited number of places available to cook on the day candidates will be chosen from names in a hat and successful candidates will be notified in advance with a given time slot.

A fee of £5 will be charged for the competitors, on the day, to cover costs and entrants will need to pay for entry to the championships. The recipe and ingredients will be provided but contestants are invited to bring their own ‘special ingredient’ – as long as it is not alcohol.

The winning tattie scone will be judged by Raymond Laidlaw - National Training Manager UK, Penny Rumford - Product Specialist Manager and Anne Wilson - Regional Sales Manager of AEG appliances who are sponsoring the event.

Elaine Sutherland of the Oakwood cookery school, who is organising the competition said: “We held our first successful Tattie Scone competition in Forres last year which was great fun and the European Pipe Band Championships is an ideal venue to take our competition up a level and we hope to have lots of entrants.”

Those wishing to register should download a form from the piping hot forres website – www.pipinghotforres.com; and send it to Elaine Sutherland on elaine@riversidekitchens.co.uk by 1200 hrs on Saturday 8 June.
