STUDENTS based at Altyre started their new term with a fun design project.

Glasgow School of Art (GSA) Masters in Design Innovation pupils planned and built a crazy golf course using materials from Moray Waste Busters household recyclers.

A GSA spokesman explained: "The project was an ice-breaker to help the students settle in and get to know each other in preparation for the more serious work to come. Design is a collaborative process so it's important to bond with peers."

He added: "They developed practical skills and got to know their host town. We're keen to ensure they are full members of that community."

The MDes in Design Innovation is a one year Masters programme.

There are 27 students at the Forres campus this year from Mauritius, China, France, the USA and India. The mix of nationalities changes every year and most are resident in Forres from September to August on a 12-month programme.

Past students have been involved in research for the Falconer Museum and worked on projects examining issues such as food waste and sustainability, home-based childcare, Forres in Bloom, alcohol dependency, tourism, career development for local youths, music therapy for senior citizens and more. GSA has a perma-culture garden on the Altyre campus which students develop and maintain. Every January the campus also hosts a two-week winter school in which students and academics gather to examine current topics and devise potential solutions.

The spokesman added: "Students get involved in different ways in their own time by joining community groups based on their own interests. The fact that each year some students are keen to stay in the area says a lot for the bonds that form.

"Forres is a big change for most of them from their prior experience and Forres soon wins them over. It's a great place to study, and a great place to practise design innovation."
