A SCHEME that nearly got the chop in Moray has been hailed a great success.

The Active Schools programme, which encourages young people to exercise, only survived after an 11th hour U-turn by Moray Council in February.

Fresh data published today by Sportscotland shows a 6.5% annual increase in the use made of the programme locally.

During the past 12 months a total of 3900 children and young people took part in Active Schools sessions in Moray across a wide range of different sporting activities.

Kim Paterson, Moray Council’s Active Schools and Sports Development manager, said: "I’m delighted to see another year of increased participation in Active Schools sessions in Moray.

"For us to see an increase of twice the national average is testament to the quality of our sessions, led by experienced and dedicated staff and volunteers.

"That almost 4000 children have taken part in sessions within the last year is incredible, and only made possible thanks to the volunteers who give up their time to support our young people."

Active Schools now has a well-established network of over 400 managers and co-ordinators across Scotland.

Due to outside financial constraints, the council at one point earlier this year gave serious consideration to becoming the only one of Scotland's 32 local authorities to go without the programme.
