A LOCAL man has won a regional business award that recognises true potential.

AES Solar operations director, Josh King (32), was presented with the Most Promising Individual accolade at the Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Awards, an annual event showcasing the achievements of the sector, while also recognising the contribution that renewable energy makes to the economy and the businesses at the heart of it.

Josh said: "I’m over the moon and very grateful. The area has a huge pool of talent in renewable energy so even after hearing about the nomination I still wasn’t expecting to win it.

"Hearing why the judges chose me was humbling and made me proud of my hard work but I was also thankful to gain attention for AES Solar, and Scottish solar in general."

AES managing director, George Goudsmit believes any company would be hard pressed to find a more committed and dedicated employee.

He said: "His contribution to renewables in Scotland speaks for itself. He has made an outstanding impact to AES Solar and the industry in the past five years and embodies this commitment in everything he does.

"We are absolutely delighted for Josh on his very well-deserved award win. It’s fantastic to see our colleagues being appreciated on an individual level and we are incredibly proud of him and his achievements to date. We look forward to seeing all that he achieves in the next five years and beyond."

Josh started at AES five years ago as a graduate engineer while studying renewable energy part time at university. He gradually moved from engineering where he designed solar energy systems to operations where he ensures that projects are delivered smoothly.

Josh was honoured to become a company director last year and now enjoys ensuring his colleagues are well equipped for the job.

He said: "The thing I love most about being part of AES Solar is working with such genuinely talented and well-intentioned people, for a cause that we all strongly believe in.

"When I moved up north to join AES Solar, many laughed and suggested solar power in Scotland is no use. We get to bust that myth and change someone’s mind about solar every day."

AES Solar has doubled in size since 2016, seeing continued growth and success including winning Scottish Solar PV installer and Contractor of the year in 2019.

Formed in 1979, it is the longest-established solar company in Europe, installing solar energy systems (PV, thermal and battery storage) of all sizes, domestic, commercial and industrial.

AES is also the only manufacturer of solar thermal panels in the UK with offices in Forres and Edinburgh.

Josh wants to continue being a part of what he sees as a bright future for the company.

He said: "More and more people are waking up to the huge untapped solar resource in Scotland. The solar industry in Scotland is going to grow, and AES Solar is uniquely poised to capture and accelerate the industry.

"We can do this by continuing to develop even more young energy professionals, and cultivate our positive and pioneering culture."
