A NAIRN man wants to mark a 20-year friendship with a Forres loon by praising his local befriending service.
In 2000, Andrew Innes did not have any friends when he approached Befrienders Highland (Nairn and Ardersier) for help and was eventually introduced to David Nicol.
Andrew said "The befriender service is for people with mental health issues, dementia or who are just lonely.
"They get a friend to help them with things like: overcoming living alone; going out and being part of the community; and gaining the confidence to lead a normal life, just like everyone else."
Initially, Andrew met David in the Befrienders office and they discovered shared interests.
"We went for a coffee and hit it off right away," said Andrew. "Since then, we have been all over Scotland, including to 10 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo!
"At first he had a dog ... that was good! I've grown up with his family."
He added: "He is very kid and helpful. A wonderful person and always there for me."
Befrienders Highland is a registered charity employing a core staff of seven who co-ordinate volunteers who give from 20 minutes to a couple of hours per week. Volunteers are offered optional on-going training opportunities and peer support meetings.
"I would recommend Befrienders Highland to anyone," finished Andrew. "It gives you a good feeling that you have helped someone who is lonely."
