A LOCAL children and young people's group hopes to deliver new transport for its members this Christmas.

The 1st Forres Scout Group will use the proceeds from its traditional Scout Post service around Forres towards a minibus which replace their second hand vehicle which is now beyond economical repair.

Secretary Louise Berry confirmed any funds raised will be added to pledges from local funding bodies, as will the proceeds from the Scouts' annual Christmas Eve bag-pack in the Co-op.

She said: "Scouting has been in the town for over 100 years and we enjoy the opportunity to do our best and help other people. The Scout Post allows our young people to put this into practice.

"The event is running from December 2-18. Easily recognisable post boxes are at Mackenzie & Cruickshank, Lidl, Tesco, Co-op, Varis Court, Forres House Community Centre, McColls at Fleurs and Wrights Home Hardware."

The Scout Post involves every member of the 1st Forres Scout Group - including Beavers (6-8-years-old), Cubs (8-10-years-old), Scouts (10-14-years-old) and Explorers (14-18-years-old), as well as leaders, adult helpers, parents/carers and past scouts and leaders - at every stage of the process.

They distribute post boxes, empty them, sort the cards into streets, count the money donated and deliver the cards around the town itself, however, not to outlying areas.

Ms Berry said: "The volunteers fit the tasks around their own busy lives so we ask that no time sensitive information, such as party invitations, are included in any cards. Delivering the cards is very much a positive experience for the young people, their families and/or leaders, enabling them to engage with their community.

"We have a core group who have been doing it at least 30 years and are passing on their knowledge. Last year we delivered in the region of 8000 cards, however, the task is becoming greater year on year as Forres expands!"

Christmas cards can be placed in the boxes for delivery around Forres - the charge is 30p per card and money should be posted into the box along with the cards.

"Our aim is to get all cards delivered by Christmas Eve," finished Ms Berry. "We very much appreciate the support from Forres folk."
