A LOCAL humanitarian is to accept a great honour from a worldwide community-based organisation.

Kinloss resident, Ken McLennan (68), will become the governor for Rotary District 1010 on Friday July 1, after which there will be a handover ceremony lunch at the Mosset Tavern on Saturday July 2.

He said: “I’m honoured, humbled and excited. The role entails leading and supporting - through the district team - our 89 Rotary clubs and over 2300 Rotarians of all ages from this side of the Firth of Forth to Shetland, and from Stonehaven to Stornoway. It’s exciting to see our world’s future leaders flourish as they undertake our Rotary Youth Leaders programme, including three from Forres this year. 1010 District has this year sponsored nearly 100 leaders of the future.”

Ken worked for an oil and gas service company, initially as an electrical project engineer in Aberdeen and ultimately developing businesses in Sub-Saharan African countries. He has been a Rotarian since 2000, initially in Portlethen before moving to his “forever house” near Forres with his family around Christmas 2018.

He said: “Being retired allows me to share my talents through Rotary. I enjoy making a difference to people’s lives with friends, locally, nationally or internationally. It’s great to see people smile as Forres Rotary take Santa’s Sleigh round, as we share tea with senior citizen’s or support Pudsey and Children in Need. Above all, we have fun!”

He added: “Rotary has also been most supportive when my wife Mary and I lived overseas through local Rotarians and as we travelled around.”

Forres Rotary Club President, Brian Higgs, confirmed the group will also celebrate its 70th anniversary at the Mosset as they were unable to do it last year due to the pandemic.

He said: “With the club celebrating its 70th year, it’s particularly pleasing to see one of our members becoming district governor. Ken is a long serving member and is committed to supporting the organisation’s involvement in communities. His appointment is great news.”
