Well, what a turbulent few weeks it has been in politics.

After three years of disastrous leadership – going from one crisis or scandal to the next – Boris Johnson has finally been forced to resign as leader of the Conservative Party.

I expect most of us will remember his premiership for all the wrong reasons – particularly the dishonesty, the lies, and the law breaking.

And although he has resigned his party role, he remains in Number 10 and has made clear his intention to cling onto power until October.

Even former Tory Prime Minister John Major has spoken out against this plan. His words were ‘unwise and unsustainable’. I would go further and say it would be disastrous.

In the midst of a cost of living crisis, and with so many big issues facing people in Moray and across these islands, we need urgent action and help from the UK Government. We do not need Boris Johnson overseeing a summer of chaos, leading a paralysed government.

It has been incredible to watch Tory MPs finally find a backbone to boot Boris Johnson from office. And more incredible that they seem to be looking for credit for doing so.

Let’s be clear: Tory MPs didn’t topple Boris Johnson because they have principles. They did so because they saw the way the wind was blowing.

After putting him in office, and backing him throughout his many scandals, these Tory MPs newfound concerns about integrity ring hollow.

This has been one of the sorriest episodes in political history.

While the Tory Party will spend the summer choosing the UK’s third Prime Minister in six years, I’ll be spending time meeting groups, organisations, and constituents across Moray.

Summer recess is a great opportunity for MSPs to spend time in their constituency and to catch up with those we represent.

Over the last two years, the pandemic really restricted how much I could do in-person in the local community. I’ve really enjoyed getting back out there this year, visiting businesses and organisations right across Moray.

This week, my summer surgery tour kicks off and over the next month I’ll be holding surgeries in 30 locations in every corner of Moray.

I know there are big issues out there at the moment and many people are struggling and unsure where to turn for help.

All constituents are very welcome to attend one of my surgeries for help or advice, so if you want to meet me to discuss any issues, please contact my office on 01343 545077 to book an appointment.

Of course, it isn’t only my summer surgery tour that’s back.

I’m delighted to see the return of big community events after two years of disruption. Local Highland games, farming shows, and community galas are already underway with many more to come.

These events are so important to Moray’s economy, bringing tourists and visitors into the area. They also bring the community together and provide all of us an opportunity to enjoy good times with friends and loved ones – something we missed during the pandemic.

Such a huge amount of work goes into the organisation of these events and I want to thank the army of volunteers who make them happen.
