Police Scotland have warned birdwatchers and photographers about getting too close to an Osprey nest in Moray.

.

The warning comes after some members of the public contacted the police to voice concerns that the birds are being disturbed at a location within the region.

The forces has stated that because ospreys are protected by law a special licence is needed to take pictures of their nests.

PC Hannah Haywood, who is a wildlife crime officer, said: "Osprey nestlings need very close parental care and are dependent on the adults for food and shelter.

"Ospreys are extremely sensitive.

"When people get too close to them they risk disturbing the birds, which could cause the adults to abandon the nest and the young.

"We want people to enjoy the countryside but to do so safely and legally.

"Ospreys are classed as a Schedule 1 species of bird and are protected by law.

"In order to photograph their nests a special licence is needed."

Information about how to apply for a licence is available here at the Nature Scot website.
