Macmillan Cancer Support will net £1600 to help support people on a cancer journey.

The Northern Scot/Highland News and Media select felt the full force of the law with Police Scotland Moray emerging with an overwhelming victory in a charity match at the home of Elgin City.

The boys in blue - seasoned competitors - ran out 11-0 winners on a gloriously sunny May afternoon.

However, the scoreline failed to dampen the spirits of the organising team.

Thanks to the support of the public and local businesses, the event was a great success.

Macmillan Cancer Support is the charity of the year for HNM, parent company of The Northern Scot, and this will give the final total a real boost before the end of the fundraising next month.

Elgin and District Pipe Band, with guests from Forres Pipe Band, performed before the game and again at half-time.

Youngsters from the Police Scotland Youth Volunteers also helped on the day.

Elgin City donated the use of Borough Briggs stadium and its facilities free of charge on the day. Thanks to Keiran Carty, general manager, and Cecil Jack, stadium manager for their support.

The Elgin City Supporters Club pie shop was also open, thanks to Bert Grant, and there was a beat the goalie competition for young fans at half-time, with young Jack Millican between the sticks.

Scotty the Newshound, mascot of The Northern Scot, made a late cameo appearance on the pitch.

Tracy McKerron-Gourlay, Tesco Elgin community champion helped on the day.

HNM Select Manager Jonny Clark said: "Putting the scoreline aside, a good day was had by all in perfect weather and, most importantly, we've raised £1600 for charity.

"A few training sessions will be had before the rematch. The fitness was the big difference towards the end, but we're delighted with how the day went overall."
