Forres Enterprise Park-based Orbex sees applications for its internship programme jump
An internship programme at a local space company has reported a 120 per cent surge in applications.
Forres Enterprise Park-based orbital launch services firm, Orbex, saw applications for its internship programme jump from 899 last year to nearly 2000 this year - reflecting a growing appetite from Scottish students to be part of the UK space race.
Director of launch at the UK space agency, Matt Archer, believes the strong interest in Orbex’s internship programme speaks volumes about the exciting opportunities the business is creating in the sector.
He said: “Orbex is playing a key role in developing the skills and talent of the future, and this surge in applications shows just how much young people want to be part of that journey.
“Congratulations to the nine successful interns, and good luck to all those looking to make their first steps into a career in space.”
The programme sees successful applicants gain hands-on experience across areas such as Assembly, Integration and Test (AIT) and Software.
It is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students with experience in mathematics, mechanical engineering, electronics engineering, space, or aerospace.
Orbex’s mechanical engineering internship proved the most popular position up for grabs, receiving 500 applications alone.
Orbex’s chief people officer, Ishbel Inkster, finished: "This is a very exciting time to join our team as we enter the final stages of developing our Prime rocket.
“The interns we select for our 2025-’26 programme will support our team of experts.
“The level of interest in our internship programme this year is unprecedented, highlighting just how exciting the sector has become.”
