Highland News and Media has been recognised for its leading journalism across the north and north-east of Scotland by reaching the finals of the national industry awards.

The 42nd Scottish Press Awards takes place in September, and celebrates the best of national, regional and digital journalism from across the country.

Daniel Forsyth, who is based at the company's Elgin office, is shortlisted in the sports photographer of the year category.

Meanwhile, John Davidson, HNM's content and commercial editor, is in the running for local weekly features writer of the year for his Active Outdoors articles.

The Inverness Courier is up against the Daily Record, Scottish Sun, Glasgow Times and The Scotsman for the news website of the year.

The finalists of the weekly newspaper of the year are due to be announced in mid-August.

The winners will be revealed at a ceremony at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Glasgow on Wednesday, September 29, to be hosted by former BBC Scotland newsreader Jackie Bird.

This year’s judging panel was chaired by former Daily Record managing director and DC Thomson chief commercial officer Denise West, who was joined by 36 independent judges, comprising 21 women and 15 men drawn from across the Scottish media, communications and public affairs industries.

Denise West said: “Every sector has faced a crisis in the past 18 months and the Scottish press was no different. As the country went into lockdown the role of independent news publishing was to keep the supply of trusted news flowing nationally and locally, so people could understand what was happening to them and to maintain open accountability at a time when democracy itself was closing down.

“From the entries to this year’s Scottish Press Awards, it’s clear that this was a challenge fully met by Scottish journalists up and down the country in the most trying of circumstances. The shortlists contain the very best of 2020’s work, but we should applaud the achievement of everyone in the industry, not just our finalists.

“The judges face a daunting task to select winners from some superb entries and we very much hope to congratulate our winners in person at the presentation night on September 29.”

The 42nd Scottish Press Awards are sponsored by VisitScotland, Royal Bank of Scotland, Diageo, Johnnie Walker Princes Street, Openreach, BIG Partnership, Women in Journalism Scotland, DoubleTree by Hilton Glasgow Central, Event Consultants Scotland and SGN.

The Scottish Press Awards were established by the Scottish Daily Newspaper Society (SDNS) 42 years ago and continues to be organised by the Scottish Newspaper Society.

They are the top awards for the Scottish newspaper industry, in both print and digital formats, and have flourished into a prestigious event in the diary of every journalist.

In the Regional Press Awards, organised by the Society of Editors, HNM sports editor Will Clark is also shortlisted for the sports journalist of the year.

The winners of these awards will be revealed online on September 16.
