A LOCAL charity has used European funding to employ a new community development worker.

Jo Smithson is working with tsiMORAY on a pilot project funded by Moray LEADER until end of August 2020, to link with organisations, groups and individuals supporting community-led initiatives.

The former GP link worker at Forres Health Centre is now one of five community development workers across Moray. The team identify and exploit opportunities, source funding, and deal with rules and regulations that can often prove challenging.

She said: "I’m delighted to be supporting the community to address specific needs. Forres is such a vibrant town with lots of active groups and a wonderful community spirit.

"As part of my role, I am trying to update a list of the vast range of groups and organisations in the area, to raise awareness of the great work they do. I am also interested in finding out more about the volunteering opportunities available, so that they can be promoted to a wider audience.

"Please get in touch and let me know what’s happening and how I can help."

Email Jo at jo@tsimoray.org.uk or call her on 0793 575 4637. She is based at Forres Town Hall on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Project leaders Jackie Maclaren and Fabio Villani are keen to use learning from the pilot to develop funding proposals for a longer term project.

"We were very fortunate to recruit Jo to this key role," said Ms Maclaren. "She brings a lot of relevant experience, knowledge and local contacts from her work at the health centre."

Mr Villani added: "As well as the direct support she can give to local initiatives, Jo will also help us develop closer ties between Forres Area Community Trust, tsiMORAY and other community-based organisations across Moray."
