HELPING people with a range of needs is at the heart of a drop-in information set to be held at the end of this month.
Moray Council's Shared Lives service is looking to add to their dedicated team of carers and are holding an information session at Elgin Community Centre on Thursday, June 30.
Current carers and the people they support will be on hand to answer questions and discuss what the varied role entails.
Shared Lives can offer day opportunities, long term and short term placements. It can be a bespoke alternative to day services, supported living or residential care.
It is all based on shared interests, lifestyles and sense of humour. The scheme feels like an ordinary life – not a service – for someone who needs support and does not feel like a ‘job’ for the Shared Lives carer.
The needs of people in the service can differ and may include dementia, mental health difficulties; frailty, learning disability, and physical and sensory disability.
One of those popping along to the event is Buckie councillor Sonya Warren, who described the carers as "worth their weight in gold".
She said: "It's such a beneficial scheme that helps relieve so of our more isolated or lonely folk out to meet others and make new friends, visit places of interest or even just shopping.
"My family know from personal experience the value of having a shared lives carer, and how much of a benefit it is to people who have conditions like dementia or just a loss of confidence after the confidence restrictions.
"Speaking to people who offer to assist with the programme shows just how rewarding it is for people who do share their lives with other members of the community.
"These people are worth their weight in gold as by sharing the activities with they offer a whole new world to others, it's a fabulous window of opportunity."
The drop-in session is due to run from 10am to 6pm. For those who cannot make it on the day but would like more information, please phone (01343) 563450 or email the Shared Lives team at email@example.com
