Forres Rotary has funding in place for the annual bonfire and fireworks display at Grant Park

THE ORGANISERS of one of the most popular annual events in Moray have confirmed it will go ahead despite a reduction in funding.

Forres Rotary was turned down for support from Moray Council via the Forres Common Good Fund but the volunteers have set aside enough proceeds from previous events to host another bonfire and fireworks display at Grant Park next month.

Rotary president Jackie Stephen confirmed, despite the knockback for cover for turf removal and replacement, the group will be helped by the local authority.

She said: “We have agreed a fee with Moray Council for reseeding the grass on the bonfire site after the event.

“We were delighted that so many people turned up last year and hope to attract many thousands of visitors again this year.”

A total of £36,995 was available to disperse to local groups and projects from the Forres Common Good Fund this year. Forres Community Activities Association was awarded £333, Transition Town Forres (TTF) received a rent rebate of £8700 and Forres in Bloom was granted £5000.

The local authority spent the rest - £22,962 - on ‘grounds maintenance recharge’, a figure that has yet to be broken down.

Forres Rotary’s displays at Grant Park are regarded as the most spectacular in Moray.

Forres bonfire night and fireworks display will be held on Saturday, November 2.

“There will be a Guy Fawkes competition for schools in the morning,” added Jackie. “The bonfire will be lit at 6.30pm, followed by an impressive fireworks display. There will also be stalls and music to enjoy.”

Rotary members will be joined by local volunteers collecting donations towards next year's event and guiding visitors.

Jackie finished: “We are grateful to local companies that support our efforts.”
