NEARLY 80 people turned out for an event in memory of a local man killed in Afghanistan on a NATO compound.

A total of 76 golfers took part in the annual Mark Duffus Memorial competition, raising £1000 for Forres Golf Club, £2317 for Poppy Scotland and £3000 for Erskine’s Leanchoil Trust. Proceeds have previously been donated to Combat Stress and Dogs for Veterans.

Organiser Albert Duffus’ son died on July 2, 2012. Former Queens Own Highlander, Mark Duffus (41) lost his life during an early morning attack at North Gate Camp, Kabul, when a truck packed with explosives was driven into a vehicle bay. The attackers started a gunfight with guards and Mark, who worked for a security firm supplying close protection, was one of seven people who died in the battle. Mark’s family have a long association with Forres, with many having served with the Queens Own Highlanders.

Albert is grateful to everyone who has taken part and contributed to the seven memorial events he has organised so far.

He said: “This year’s was fantastic. We had great support from organisations including Aberdeen FC and The Picture Framer in Forres, who donated items for auction."
