MEMBERS of a local Celtic FC supporters club have come together to raise £1500 for Moray Food Plus.

Moray Emerald Celtic Supporters Club raises money annually through collections and selling football scratch cards on buses to matches.

The aim was to raise £1100 for charity but the final total was better than expected. It was decided in April that the money would go to the food bank.

President Caroline Anderson said: "We are over the moon to be able to help in any way.

"We have been overwhelmed by the response from the local Celtic support. It has been fantastic.

"The plan was to hand over £1000 but we had enough to put the total up by £500. All of the money was raised by the members throughout the season.

"We decide at the end of the season where we are going to put the money and this year Moray Food Plus has seen increased demand and is needing funding so we decided to give to them.

"Every year we support different charities and everyone has been very kind. That's what Celtic is all about."

Demand has increased massively at the food bank since lockdown – with the amount of users more than doubling from April 2019 to April 2020.

Moray Food Plus volunteer development officer Gillian Pirie said: "We were delighted to be contacted by the club offering their donation of £1100 for the most vulnerable in Moray during lockdown.

"It was an even bigger surprise to be granted with a further £400 at the cheque presentation.

"To give an idea of the level of demand, Moray Food Plus provided emergency food provision for 1091 individuals during April – a huge increase from 446 last year.

"Donations like these are so important in enabling us to continue the work we do in our communities and we would like to thank the members for their support."

Moray Emerald CSC, formed in 1977, has raised funds for a number of charities over the last few years – and has recently supported MND Scotland.

The group, which meets in the Kirky Bar in Elgin, has between 80 and 100 members across Moray and beyond.
