Maclean’s Highland Bakery customers were entertained by the Glasgow Hong Lok Dragon and Lion Dancing Troupe





Staff at a local bakers are looking forward to a period of transformation, renewal, and growth following a visit from a Chinese lion.

Scottish Highlands and Islands and Moray Chinese Association (SHIMCA) organised the traditional event in Maclean’s Highland Bakery’s car park at West Road, Forres on Monday morning, featuring the Glasgow Hong Lok Dragon and Lion Dancing Troupe.

Maclean’s managing director Lewis Maclean accepted the blessing from his special visitors, welcoming The Year of the Snake.

He said: “It was a different performance from last year and they blessed the front of the bakery so that should bring good luck to our business and customers!

“On Monday night I also attended a grand dinner in Inverness to celebrate the Chinese New Year. It was quite a formal evening as the Provost of Inverness Councillor Glynis Sinclair attended with the Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Edinburgh, Zhang Biao.”

The Lunar New Year 2025, starting on January 29, marks the Year of the Wood Snake. Celebrated across Asian cultures, this year emphasises shedding negativity and embracing change.

She said: “It was raining but the music and dance brightened up a dreich morning. Several spectators and children from Pilmuir Nursery were amazed to see the lion.

“Fortune cookies were handed out and MacLean’s also gave everyone a specially made biscuit with the Year of the Snake motif.”

Lewis estimates around 50 people in total attended including the support crew for the performance.

He finished: “It was a good number, considering the weather!”
