Moray Council has been replacing 14 street lights at the east end of Forres as part of a phased programme.

The current stage of the programme focuses on the lighting in streets from Drumduan Road up to the SSE substation in Highfield, Forbeshill.

The mild steel streetlights, which were installed in 1976, have exceeded their design life and are showing signs of internal corrosion. Their replacements are made from marine grade aluminium and have a design life of over 50 years.

The new lanterns use the latest technology, allowing them to be dimmed for a fixed period of time. The lanterns will only use 60 per cent of the “fully-on” energy between midnight and 6am.

“They also use a white light source lamp which gives better colour rendition, better lighting and use less energy compared to the existing scheme,” said a council spokesperson.

“Each lamp will consume 95kW less energy per year, with reduced carbon emissions. Cables also degrade, so we are taking the opportunity to replace the existing cable network in this scheme while the footways are being reconstructed as part of our roads maintenance programme.”

The rest of Drumduan Road will be completed this year.
