Richard Lochhead MSP asked Moray Council to investigate the issue of local homelessness following claims that there were up to four individuals sleeping rough in the town.

“I remain very concerned at the prospect of anyone in Moray being forced to sleep outside,” he said, “particularly at this time of year as temperatures begin to drop.

“I have been informed that temporary accommodation has been offered to one constituent in Forres, which is welcome given the need for everyone to have a roof over their heads.

“However, I await a full reply from the Moray Council on this issue.”

The ‘Gazette’ received confirmation from Moray Council.

“The Housing Service met with the gentleman,” said a spokesperson.

“He has been provided with temporary accommodation pending a full assessment of his housing and care needs.”

Forres Community Council chair, Stewart Noble, was happy to hear that one local homeless man had been housed, but voiced his remaining concern that others still do not have a permanent address.

He said: “If anyone knows of others sleeping rough outdoors please let me know by private message or e-mail Forrescc@gmail.com

Forres Police will also continue to monitor the local situation.

“From time to time the police come into contact with people who are homeless,” said a spokesperson.

“Where appropriate, we assess their vulnerabilities and share information with other services to resolve the situation.”
