Carol (75), from Elgin, has worked at the Royal Voluntary Service café in Dr Gray's Hospital for the last five years.

She admitted she needed to keep busy and have a focus after she lost her husband Ian, who she had cared for latterly.

"I love volunteering. I had been approached before but I couldn't do it as I needed to look after Ian who had vascular dementia.

"After he died I plucked up the courage and applied, and I really liked it.

"I've always liked working with the public. I worked in Abbeyside Nursing Home and different places."

Carol now works at the hospital four or five days a week

"It gave me a boost and gave me some confidence back," she said. "The ladies are very nice.

"It did help me an awful lot because it is hard to lose someone. We had been married 45 years."

She was delighted to win the Volunteer of the Year Award at the Moray and Banffshire Heroes on Thursday night at the Mansefield Hotel in Elgin.

"I feel a wee bit guilty because I have only been doing it for five years and a lot of the ladies have been there for years.

"I just wish Ian had been here to see me getting it (award)."

An emotional Carol, who was accompanied at the awads by her daughter, thanked those who had nominated and voted for her in the award category, sponsored by the Robertson group.
