A LOCAL riding group is honouring the memory of a much-loved horseman with the launch of a new annual fundraiser.

Former soldier, engineer and fireman Lesley Clyne passed away last summer aged 91 at the end of a life devoted to horses.

Les was a Non-commissioned Officer in the Army's 259 Horse Transport Regiment, set up Forres Pony Trekking and Riding Centre, was committed to the Herald on Horseback (announcing the newly appointed Gala Queen each year), as well as the Northern Working Horse and the Horse and Carriage society.

In keeping with his renown generous spirit and wishes, the collection at his funeral was donated to Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Forres, Nairn and District branch, based at Burgie. The trustees used the donation to cover the cost of a pony for 12 months in Les's memory.

RDA trustee and Lesley's friend Jan Thorne, said: "He was such a character and his final donation to RDA was so generous. We felt it was important to use the money to help keep his memory alive so a child will be able to come riding every Monday for a whole year thanks to Les. He would have been really proud of that."

A Les Clyne Memorial Fundraiser will now be held for RDA every year to continue his legacy.

Jan's daughter Amanda, who is also a RDA trustee, said: "Les knew first-hand the benefits of horses and riding, so this feels right. Riding can change children's lives."

Forres, Nairn and District RDA group offers free therapeutic sessions to 32 children with disabilities from local primary and secondary schools, contributing to their physical and mental well-being, with many of them achieving a level of success they rarely experience in other aspects of their lives. RDA has well-trained ponies, professional coaches and a group of volunteers who provide time as leaders, side-walkers and fundraisers. The cost to RDA of pony hire, instruction, insurance and more comes to nearly £600 per week.
