WORK on mending a historic local building's roof is nearing completion.

Contractors have been fixing holes in the leaky roof at St Leonard's Church since March, using money from a Church of Scotland General Trustees grant of £10,000, £6000 from a Day of Giving event, generous donations and church funds, taking the total cost to £28,000.

St Leonard's session clerk, Roy Anderson confirmed there were leaks whenever there was heavy rain that badly affected walls and carpetting, and that parts of the grounds had been cordoned off due to loose masonry, however, the scaffolding outside is scheduled to come down soon.

He added that repairs were put on hold during the coronavirus lockdown and whenever the bad weather of the last few months prevented it.

He said: "The work has not impaired restarting services, which are now held on the second and fourth Sundays of the month, as folk are going in and out the side door. All Scottish Government guidelines are being strictly adhered to, as they are for groups back to hiring the hall."

St Leonard's hall and kitchen extension add to the venue's popularity and the church transepts have been opened up by removing pews to create open spaces.

Around 18 organisations use the facilities every week.

Mr Anderson said: "Having a sound roof over our heads is clearly important in preserving our building and allowing us to move forward in faith once things return to some semblance of normality."
