A FOOD network developer from Findhorn is standing in the Moray Council elections for the Scottish Green Party.

Draeyk Van Der Horn (52) aims to use his experience of local politics and service to communities in different countries as a ward 8 councillor focused on sustainability and tackling climate change.

He said: “What is important to me is how to deliver a happy, healthy community. The Scottish Green Party wants to make a real difference for the betterment of all.”

Mr Van Der Horn previously worked alongside Dartmoor National Park as a parish councillor and has a history of spearheading community networks, neighbourhood groups and events.

He believes standing as a Green candidate allows him to give more people a voice.

He said: “The Scottish Green Party looks at under-representation in society and disenfranchisement and lack of trust in politics.”

Mr Van Der Horn states dealing with the after-effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, cost of living crisis and the increasing impact of climate change are issues he will tackle as an elected councillor.

He said: “We need to invest in energy saving measures to cut bills, help end fuel poverty and protect our environment. We need to look at how to support healthy eating and access to good food, including supporting projects like Transition Town Forres. Any loss in what the high street has to offer needs to be looked at. There are many opportunities as we shift into a new greener economy. We need to support education and new enterprise by providing mentorship and initiatives that boost young people and existing business owners.”
