APPLICATIONS are being invited for funding that will help improve the lives of older people in Forres.

Thousands of pounds are available to groups or individuals with projects aimed at benefitting the elderly community of the area, for things like transportation costs, events, equipment or adaptations, educational or recreational courses, interests or pursuits.

The Auchernack Comforts Fund Trust is what remains of a donation made by late Forres postie William Cameron who left £750,000 for the benefit of residents of Auchernack Care Home.

The total amount available to disburse in financial year April 2019 to March 2020 is £17,265.

Trustee and local councillor Lorna Creswell explained: "We distribute funds twice in the year, usually in May and November, but there has not been a huge take up of the offer so far so we are extending the closing date to Friday, December 13.

"The interest is what we have been allocating but applicants should not be deterred from asking for capital costs."

Projects that have benefited from Auchernack support in the past include the Osprey Bus service, Forres Area Community Trust's Cameron's Champions befriending scheme, musician visits to care homes, a gardening project at a care home, hearing loop systems in community halls, and a hoist for Forres Bowling Club's playing mats.

"We prefer to fund lasting projects," said Ms Creswell, "and things that help people taking up a new hobby, learning something new, volunteering or just wishing to get involved with others.

"The application process is very simple and can be sourced on Moray Council's website or by contacting a local councillor or Forres Community Council."
