Forres Rotary David Urquhart Bequest to help young people do humanitarian work
ROTARY Club of Forres is inviting young people to apply for a grant to help them undertake humanitarian work.
The David Urquhart Bequest is administered by Rotary Forres who award up to £250 per person to 17-20-year-olds who wish to help a project in a deprived country.
Rotarian Alasdair Urquhart confirmed the late David Urquhart was an honorary member, retired Gordon & McPhail director, and a major supporter of community events including Piping At Forres, the European Pipe Band Championships.
Alasdair said: "The bequest has been running for four years and there have been nine recipients so far. Two awards were issued last year to young people working on humanitarian projects overseas."
The awards have been used towards the cost of volunteers undertaking projects in developing countries for the benefit of residents. These have included providing safe water and sanitation in Tanzania and Nepal, and teaching disadvantaged children in China and Chile.
One recent recipient: said "I was lucky enough to receive funding for a project in Africa where I had been working in schools teaching girls and young women about health and hygiene.
"I would encourage anyone who is thinking of doing some voluntary humanitarian work abroad to apply for support from the David Urquhart Bequest. Going to work on a charitable project abroad could help save lives and change someone’s future."
Applications can be made at any time but there is a maximum of one request per individual.
Rotary Forres assess the merits of applications and their adherence to the criteria set out in the bequest.
