MORAY over-55s can try new activities for free this March, including exercise drumming and sound bathing.

.

First Time for Everything sessions in Alves and Bishopmill, Elgin, are being arranged by the Royal Voluntary Service and will introduce people to new, uncommon activities.

The exercise drumming session, in Bishopmill Hall on Friday, March 4 at 10.30am, will let "drummers get their muscles pumping while beating out stress-busting rhythms."

Drumming teacher Sharon Finlay will lead the activity, with attendees able to enjoy refreshments afterwards.

The First Time for Everything events are intended to give a boost to the mental health and social life of isolated or mobility-impaired people in the community.

According to a recent participant survey, 88 per cent of respondents said the events helped their mental health and wellbeing, and 80 per cent said they felt less isolated afterwards.

The other planned session is a sound bath morning at Alves Village Hall at 10.30am on Tuesday, March 22.

Sound bathing is an activity where participants relax to the sound of "sound waves, gongs, singing bowls and other soothing instruments".

The only requirement for attending the chilled-out session is to be over-55, and to bring a warm blanket and a pillow or yoga mat.

Both sessions are being funded by the People's Postcode Lottery, and being organised by long-running charity the Royal Voluntary Service.

Laura Chow, head of charities for the People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “It’s never too late to try something new and to have fun trying.

"First Time for Everything activities are a safe, gentle and enjoyable way to be active and social, which are vital to our health and wellbeing.

"Thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery, local people will be able to enjoy a wide range of interesting activities this year.”

Booking is required to attend either session.
