When they arrived at Sheena’s Lingerie they found the sign hanging off the outside wall while a young woman held onto it to stop it blowing away. A man was collecting parts which had already fallen off.

But within minutes firefighters had removed it safely from the wall and it is now in pieces in the close beside the store.

Owner Sheena Munro was shaken by the event. "I’m glad nobody was really hurt," she said.

Ms Munro was serving a customer when the events happened. She saw parts of the sign blow away and then two metal bars which held it up fell in front of the entrance to the shop, which prevented anyone leaving by the front door.

"I just phoned the fire brigade," Ms Munro said. "They were just minutes and they took all the frame work down and made it all safe."

A fire service spokeswoman said the received the 999 call at 1.55pm, and the job was completed by 2.10pm.
