Representatives from organisers The Scotch Pie Club and the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders (SFMT) presented the award at Mosset Park in front of a salivating crowd of journalists and Cans players.

"It gives me great pleasure to accept the first trophy of our season," said Mechanics chairman, Dr James Anderson.

"It’s always good to see local businesses benefitting through their relationship to this football club,"

"I’m absolutely delighted that we have won the award for our pies but we’ll still make sure the players don’t get too many before a match."

Douglas Scott, SFMT chief executive, said there had been club entries from the Scottish Premier, Scottish Football, Highland and Junior Leagues. He hopes that the award will encourage football fans from further afield to sample Forres’s prize winning pies.

"The pie is the best hand-held snack for a cold day at a football match," said Mr Scott. "We had to make sure we picked a product that fit the bill and the Forres steak pie was in a league of its own."

Nine products made the final, narrowed down to six before the judging panel of journalists and sports personalities led by Dunfermline Athletic director of football, Jim Leishman.

Pie maker Ronnie Murdoch of Murdoch Brothers Butchers was pleased to accept the award with Cans chairman Dr James Anderson and a few of the players.

"We take huge pride in all of our products so to receive this recognition for our Forres football pie is of the highest praise and a huge honour," said Ronnie.

"The secret of our success is the locally produced beef, the crisp shell and our special gravy.

"We sell around 500 at every game so thank you to our customers as well as Jim Leishman and the other judges who chose our pie."
