A GROUP of 14 students were recognised at a regional award ceremony celebrating the achievements of young people.

Forres Academy’s Leadership Class, taught by principal teacher of Physical Education and Leadership, Mr Scott Fraser, was highly commended in the school award section at the Moray Young Citizen Awards.

Mr Fraser said: "This group of young adults are to be commended for the vital role they have played in offering our school community a series of events and services that bring cheer and optimism to our pupils. The experiences which they have provided have had such a positive impact on the lives of our pupils, not least those who struggle with learning barriers and domestic hardship."

He added: "I have thoroughly enjoyed working alongside them and this award is worthy recognition for all of their endeavours this year."

The criteria for the accolade was that nominees "demonstrate good citizenship by making an outstanding contribution to their local environment or surrounding neighbourhood."

This year, Mr Fraser's class did this on numerous occasions, including: organising Applegrove Primary and Forres Academy school sports days; running a Christmas Cracker Event at Forres Academy for over 600 pupils and staff; delivering primary school transition sessions and PE lessons to P6/7 pupils; providing one-to-one support for Additional Support For Learning pupils; planning and delivering a Health Awareness Day to promote the benefits of physical, social and emotional wellbeing to 150 S1 pupils.

Mr Fraser explained: "The Leadership Award seeks to develop learners’ potential as employable, contributing members of society through the development of leadership skills and knowledge. "Thus learners may be able to develop lifelong, transferable skills which could serve them well in employment, and promote opportunities which allow individuals to build self-confidence and self-esteem.

"Pupils who undertake this course are role models - their conduct promotes high standards to younger pupils and creates a culture of ambition."

Emma Swanson (17) is one of the current crop of Leadership students at Forres Academy.

She said: "I feel immensely proud to be part of our team. Being commended was testament to the effort and commitment we put into our projects so it was amazing to have that effort recognised.

"The Leadership class has helped grow my confidence and prepared me for the struggles and challenges I will face in the real world. It has taught me more about myself and helped foster connections and friendships that will last far beyond school. It has really been an invaluable experience and I am honoured to have been a part of the amazing work we have done."
