ORGANISERS are looking for fresh input into an annual local event that has been running at the town hall for 88 years.
Following the 2019 Forres Flower Show, committee chairman Bill Shand and member Jane Rooke reflected on what has changed over the decades, as well as the latest entries.
Bill said: "I have been showing flowers and fruit for the best part of 40 years but there are others who have been going longer than that.
"There have been many changes over the years - there used to be contest between all the big house gardeners, as well as amateurs, whereas today, all the entrants are amateurs.
"All the big classes are now down from being a six vase class down to either a three vase or one vase because not everyone has a big garden and hobbies have changed over the years."
He added: "Willie Mackenzie is a local man whose onions and vegetables are well know in all the shows around this area and further afield. He has won the best in show with his box of veg' nearly every year but has been beaten by a display of Chrysanthmumsn, and on another year, Dahlias.
"This year, a lady beat everything with her cross-stitch work which was beautifully done."
Bill pointed out that all of the sections vary from year-to year.
He said: "We have lost of exhibitors over the years and not many young ones coming on to take there place. This year we were up on baking, arts and crafts but down on Chrysanths and pot plants.
"The children’s section was up on last year. It's difficult as they are not long back to school so we have to put classes in to suit that.
"There was a slight drop in overall entries, manly because of the weather. There are not many apples around and things did not go to plan with other exhibitors.
"We had a drop in people coming to the morning coffee and also a slight drop in people coming in to view the show."
He added: "We are always looking for new ideas - any would help."
Jane was most impressed by a crocheted octopus entry but confirmed the overall entry number was down on previous years.
She said: "The weather generally has an effect on the flowers, plants and vegetable categories. The Gladioli display was good and the cut flowers reasonable. Pot plants, Chrysanthemums and roses were down.
There were not so many school entries but as always Wee FIBbees gave us great support."
Jane explained that the event relies on fundraising coffee mornings to pay for the hall hire and prizes.
She said: "When you add up the £700 it cost to hire the Town Hall, plus the prize money we give out, costs for schedule printing and goods to make the teas etc, it doesn't take much of a mathematician to work out why we need the money to come in from refreshments and raffles.
"The show always makes a loss due to the costs but this year we made a loss of £307 compared with a loss last year of only £87."
