STARS of the silver screen could swap the Hollywood hills for Cluny Hill once a creative project gets under way.

Postponed as a result of the pandemic last year, and under the direction of Tim Flood and Brian Hill, social cinema group Film Forres is launching a course on April 19 aimed at strengthening a sense of community through film.

Tim and Brian have more than 40 years of tutoring experience between them – Tim trained at the BBC and has been both a teacher and a freelance film editor.

Tim Flood is looking forward to sharing his knowledge of film and camera work.

He said: “Film School Forres (FSF) will teach an understanding of film as well as practical film-making. It’s aimed at beginners of all age ranges and there will be a strand for teachers on using film in the classroom.”

The pair have designed five modules with tutorials and assignments, with feedback from Google Classroom and Meets. Anyone can access the video tutorials but a Google account will be needed for teaching materials. Certificates will be awarded on completion of the assignments.

“Students can take as long as they like for each module,” explained Tim. “Up to the summer, we will be delivering 10 online classes to cover the first two, which have around 10 elements each.”

Brian Hill will also share his understanding of film theory and production.

Brian has previously worked in community outreach and development, and has designed higher education learning materials. The former web specialist and film-maker has also trained people with learning disabilities.

He said: “By analysing films and screen media, as well as creating their own work, FSF participants will build a framework through which they can communicate using the language of film. Everyone carries a tool for writing moving images in their pocket but not many can use a smartphone to create meaning in the digital visual world.

“FSF aims to teach how to create moving images and to do this we need to understand film: what the intentions of filmmakers are; how they use the camera; sequence shots; use sound and music; work with light and space; and create emotional impact.”

Local film-makers including Maria Viola Craig, Diana Mosterd, Ianto Moore, Yvonne Findlay and Neil Webster will be invited to talk. As lockdown eases community workshops will be held at Forres Town Hall and Transition Town Forres.

FSF has been funded by Creative Scotland and Forres Youth Café.
